-=PCTechTalk=- Re: integrated audio and video

Hi

First I have an AMD 1800 and ASUS A7V266-E Motherboard with built in sound
which can turn be turned off.

If your buying it from Dell Dealer ask him to show you how to turn it on/off
and check the manual. Assuming you get one, you may not. If not, everything
I say here may be of little value or help to you.

If you know whether you want it activated or not (on the board), have the
deal set it up for you before you leave with it. I do not think they will
charge you for that, especially if the salesman understands this is a big
consideration in buying it. :-)

If your buying the sound card from the Dell dealer, make sure he installs it
and it is working. I would also check on how the warrantee will be affected
by you installing the card or installing anything else during the warrantee
period.

If your getting it from a private party, ask them to show you the manual
(assuming one came with it). Maybe he can set it up for you before you take
it. There is a d/l program you can run and it is designed to tell you just
about everything (Hardware and software) that is on the puter. It is called
Belarc. http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html d/l it on the puter, run it
and it will give you a list of what is on the puter. I have it, it comes in
handy when talking to techs, etc. (there may be other ones out there better,
but I have no knowledge of them).

In either case, I think you can go to Dell's web site and look at and/or d/l
the manual. ----- I just went to Dell's web site and I found no link to
anything that would address the MB or a manual for it. Further more, I could
not find a number to call for help but they wanted me to open an account (of
some type) to proceed and I did not pursue it further.

Also in either case, it should (most likely I think) by controlled through
the Bios. If not the Bios, then you may need to jumper some metal extended
posts from a small plastic block on the MB. That is no big deal and again
the manual should tell you which block and posts you need to jump (or remove
the jumper) and its approximate location on the MB. The jumper is nothing
more then a small rectangle piece of plastic that slips over some extended
posts. Again the manual will tell you which posts that it should be inserted
over. It may be difficult to get to the block and you may have to remove a
card or two, do the jumping and then replace the card(s).

If you know all this all ready, my apologies as I do not know how
knowledgeable you are. (Besides may be someone else might learn something in
this???)
