Dolores,
You're right. The modem is an add-on card that's installed inside the
computer tower. The directions I sent are already pretty close to the
simplest thing I can suggest. However, we can try it without opening up the
case and physically removing the modem.
Right click on My Computer and select Properties from the context menu.
When the Property sheet opens, click on the Hardware tab and then on the
Device Manager button. Click on the plus sign (+) next to where it says
"Modems" and you should see the listing for the modem that's installed on
the computer. Right click on the modem name and select Uninstall from the
menu. You'll get a warning that you're about to remove this device form the
system. Click Yes to proceed. Once it finishes deleting the modem,
immediately reboot the computer and allow it to 'discover' the modem again.
It should automatically reinstall the correct drivers for the device. If
the driver files were causing this issue, this procedure may be enough to
repair the bug. If it doesn't work, only them would I suggest following
your son's suggestion by telling him to take it back to where he bought it
and let them fix it for him.
Peace,
GMan
