Dolores,
The problem is most likely that the modem's drivers are a little
corrupted. Have him uninstall the modem (physically remove it from the
computer), boot up the system fully, shut it down and then reinstall the
modem (using the latest drivers from the modem's manufacturer's site). That
will give him brand spanking new drivers for the modem to use as well as
reseat the modem card itself.
If it doesn't help, let us know and we'll try a different approach.
