Christine,
    CD-RW disks have to be 'erased' before you can write data over an area 
where data used to be.  This 'erasing' procedure actually melts the 
recording layer back to it's original 'flat' state (well, close enough 
anyway) so it's ready for new data to be burned to it.  This process 
requires the laser to be hotter than when you read or write to a disk.  As a 
consequence, it has to be performed as a separate, deliberate step and will 
remove ALL of the data from the disk.  Most burning software includes this 
function.
