the only thing that doesn't seem to work about that is the size of open
window
I have to keep resizing it smaller, I don't like it so darned BIG when I
click open a folder
and it doesn't remember that resized setting the next time

You can do that without going into regedit

Open your My Computer folder, arrange the folder setting you like (details,
thumbnails, etc.)
then select 'tools' then folder options, click the view tab, under folder
views,
"Apply To All Folders" click ok.

I need advice on how to fix Windows XP so it will remember the folder view
settings.  I've heard you have to mess around in REGEDIT and I'm a bit
uncomfortable with that so if that's the case, I need "specific"
instructions for sure!  Thankyou for any help you can give me on this.
