-=PCTechTalk=- Re: flash drive/thumbdrive question

I ended up with a dead thumb drive. It was only a month old, so staples
replaced it. I don't know if I killed it by not 'ejecting' it or removing it
safely, or what. They said there is some sort of internal battery in there
(news to me!) that they felt was defective. worked for me, since they replaced
it! but I try to always remember to remove safely. Also, I have a gizmo that I
bought that I put my camera cards into, rather than hook my camera to the
computer. They tell me to go to 'my computer' and right click and choose eject
before I remove the card. I think that is the same thing as safely remove
hardware. My external hard drive told me to choose safely remove hardware also.
Our power went out once, and I have had trouble booting it ever since. grrr!!
so - it is best to do that!!

Cristy,
After the drive is inserted into the USB port, a new icon should appear
in the Notification Area (where the clock resides). In the front of most
(if not all) USB drives is a small LED that flashes or stays on as long as
the drive is 'mounted' (recognized by Windows and ready for use). When
you're finished with the drive, click on this icon and then on the listing
that appears for the thumb drive. This will allow Windows to 'unmount' the
drive from the system. It'll then tell you that it's safe to remove the
drive from the USB port. If she tries to remove it while it's still
mounted, she'll receive that warning about possible lost data. I've lost
data myself until I figured this out. :O/

Peace,
GMan
