My bad. I always remove the word Mozilla from the target folder during
my installs of Firefox.

It will automatically select the top entry which is usually Edit, but
that does not mean that entry is set as the default. You will know that an
entry IS considered as the default when you choose an entry and find that
the Default button can no longer be selected.
This is the first time that you fully described the steps you take to
open up the files that are causing you grief. I now understand that you are
trying to open them across the network from within My Network. This doesn't
exactly tell me why they still won't open (I'll continue searching for an
answer), but it does help narrow down the suspects a bunch. lol

You're right in that I meant for you to OK the settings and not Cancel
out of any of it, so it's a good thing you're 'on the ball'. I had just
finished another tutorial for someone else where they needed to Cancel out
of all open windows and I must have been more tired than I thought.
Since you can get them showing fine in IE by using "Open with", try the
same thing (Open with), but with Firefox. I'm just curious. After the
attempt, use the Start > "Set program access and defaults" shortcut to
return default browser control to IE.

You are more than welcome to send it to me, but it sounds like a coding
error and I'm not a Powerpoint coder.
