All CDs can be copied......just some may be a tiny bit more difficult than
others.
The illegal act is making a copy.........regardless of who does it. When you
loan, or give, a CD to someone, they have the same rights relative to the use
of the CD as you did. The operative word here is "use". Obviously they can
listen to it. To copy/distribute to others without paying royalties is illegal
in most states, and I believe Federally, regardless of whether YOU receive
remuneration. Even if you copy it and give it away for free, you are violating
the law. If you allow someone to copy your CD while you still own it, you are
violating the law. That's why the music companies prevailed in court, in spite
of an earlier interpretation that said one could copy the CD for "personal"
use. The music companies showed that millions of dollars in royalties were
lost when people downloaded music (essentially making copies of the music).
They went after both the person downloading it, AND the person making it
available, including the companies that made it possible to copy the music --
Grokster, etc.
Bottom line here is......
A) you can copy it for your own personal use (ex. CD - your computer)
B) to allow a copy to be made for someone else, or to copy and give a copy to
someone else, is a violation of copyright law and "could" subject you to
persecution.

[-] This really gets complicated doesnt it? So if I "loan" a music CD to
someone and they return it, it is ok not knowing whether they had it copied or
loaned it to someone else, especially like tape casettes. I guess now a days
they make CD's so they cant be copied though. ;0 Christine ----- Original

[-] No expert here but I would say yes it would be copyright infringement..
because anyone can then reuse it for their own use not having paid for it?...It
may be only for personal use but once it leaves YOUR hands it could then be
used by anyone else... ----- Original Message ----- From: "cristy"

one of those songs in a personal photo slide show to send to family members
through email, would that violate copyright? Does anyone know?
