can you recommend a program for cleaning up the duplicate files? preferably 
freeware?

You would be surprised at how fast a measley 20GB harddrive can fill up.  My
drive currently has over 15GB of "stuff" on it including MS Office Basic
Edition, email, internet, security and other essentials.  It does not
include about 9GB of JPG or data on my other hard drive or several GBs of
data stored on CDs and DVDs.

If you think you have a bunch of duplicate files download a duplicate file
detector to search for and delete them.
