I'm not disagreeing per se, but this is a short term solution. It is best
to use this as a troubleshooting or nuisance mechanism. The better way is
to:
(in order of preference)
1. Open the offending icon by double clicking or right clicking, go into
the options/preferences/properties menu and find the option to start
automatically or minimize to system tray when running or something similar.
Disable this.
2. Go to the startup folder of the start menu and delete any icons there
you don't want running.
3. Remove all those programs you have now disabled after a reboot (to
verify that they aren't running) if you're sure you won't use them again.
If you think you might need them, then start them manually and anytime they
ask you if you want them to start automatically or such tell it no. There
might/should be a checkmark for "don't show this warning again", but some
are very persistent and will try anything to be running all the time.
4. The next step is for the bad stuff that won't go away in increasing
order of difficulty/danger. Backup your registry first! Try a good
registry cleaning program. RegCleanr works well and has a tab that will
not just bypass the TSR, but it will comment it from the registry so it
won't run. I highly recommend uninstalling apps (if possible) that have
their startup tied to a registry key. If you can keep it from starting,
then you can *usually* complete the uninstall. It will also help you clean
suspicious registry entries as well, but you have to be SURE that the
programs are completely uninstalled first. It has a backup feature, but we
never want to use that. <G> Next, go to the site or google search and
research how to disable/remove it with manual registry editing. Be careful
here. Editing the registry by *any* means can be from bothersome to deadly
for your OS. Check, recheck, and think about the source of the
information. Verify by at least one other unrelated source. No typos
allowed here. Period.
Msconfig will work for troubleshooting and annoyance purposes to resolve
software conflicts, but it has been known to mysteriously become enabled
again and it has been known to add another entry for persistent and
aggressive TSR's. It doesn't remove them, just bypasses them. Best to
*rid* the system of the ones you don't want. Anything that cannot be
manually removed easily from startup and isn't a part of the OS or security
(i.e. firewalls and AV) is very likely something we don't want on our
systems.

| Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- Windows XP Question??
|
|
|
| My Aunt & Uncle have had a new computer a couple of
| months. Running WinXP Home Edition.
|
| They have multiple programs popping in the systray
| upon booting.
|
| How do I prevent those programs from automatic
| loading?
|
| Or should I just get one of those programs that give
| control back to the user for startup programs?
|
| I think StartupCPL is one, I forgot the other.
|
| The websites to these will be helpful as well.
|
| Thank you,
|
| Glen
