It could be...all of this just gave me a big fat clue!  When you press Ctrl,
Alt, Delete this list comes up, upon which is Explorer and Systray.  These
items can be closed one by one when you click on the "end task" button.
Maybe that "taskmon.exe" means task monitor, that would make sense, since
that's what this list would be doing, monitoring the tasks that are running.
And if you ended each task, except for those two, there would be nothing
running to interfere with your scan disk or defrag--I forget, is that where
this conversation started?  Anyway, I could be right maybe, I wish Troth or
KC were around to confirm, I think Troth knows w-ME.  Anyway, try ctrl, alt
delete and see if you think the same thing, ok. We may be onto

I have    C:\WINDOWS\taskmon.exe   in the Start Up .  Could that be it  ??
