all IE settings were at normal, with the exception of restricted.  I've been
running my firewall with no problem up until yesterday, and I opened the
related ports to all the apps that I tried to connect with specifically...
what I can't really pinpoint was the date I installed SP3 for win2K... the
last time I was connected to winMX was the last week or so of Sept... and
the last time I used netmeeting was around that same time period....
