in reguards to Gmans Q's...
I have a HP Pavillion 8755C, 383 MB of ram on a pentim 3 ( 800 MHZ ), with 30
GB of hard drive.
it has a cd player & burner & a floppy disk & has Version Windows ME. I do have
a dell copy & a emachine copy, but only a product key & not the other key
needed.
ME which is one of the reasons I dont want vista, as everyone I talk to says it
is causing as much trouble as
ME did.
I know I've needed to get rid of ME for a loong time....................

ML,
I vaguely recall something about 'deactivating' a WinXP installation to
free up the license for use elsewhere. The MS license is structured around
a concept of "One license per computer", meaning that it cannot be run on
more than one system at the same time. Built into the license terms is the
ability to transfer the license to another computer as long as it has been
removed from its original system first. If you could find someone with an
old WinXP system that is no longer being used, and then persuade them to let
you have it for little to nothing (they would also be donating the XP
license), you could then deactivate the install (it would no longer run on
that old donated system) and then install it onto your friend's system. You
would have to get both the original disks & MS install serial key from the
donor and it might require a little manipulating to get it to install on a
different manufacturer's system (if donor machine is a Dell and friend's
system is a Compaq, for example), but it IS doable.
Can you tell us what make/model computer he has? It would allow us to
make sure it would even be able to run XP before you get too deep into this
project.
Peace,
GMan

The only dumb questions are the ones we fail to ask.
