| Paging file and virtual memory are the same thing. Yes, you can put it on
another drive, and there's varying views on this. Some say its good to do it
so it doesn't defrag your main drive, while some say it should be on the
same drive as Windows because it provides faster access to the virtual
memory.
| My recommendation, and I'd be interested in what others on this list say,
is to put it on the faster of the drives. I wouldn't set up a seperate
partition for it, but I would take the faster of your drives, if you have
more than one, and keep it there. Of course, if they're both the same speed,
keep it on the same drive as Windows.
|
| Some programs (maybe even with the built-in WinXP defragger) you can tell
it WHERE on the drive to place it. Although I don't personally change that,
its recommended that you keep the paging file in the front of the drive.
|
| Another recommendation is sort of a pre-Windows installation tip.
Repartition your drive and make a partition specifically for your Windows
install. Some people use 5GB, I use 10GB. Make that 10GB partition your
Windows partition, and keep everything else on your other partitions and/or
drives.

| Hi Troth,
| A while back (2 years!) G-man suggested putting the swap file on another
| drive to avoid fragmenting C:. Are the swap file and paging file the
same
| thing? You wrote: "Your main C drive should be highlighted on top." Mine
is,
| but should I move it? If so, would I just set C: to No Paging File and
then
| set it up on a less used drive?
| Thanks, Sharon

| Protection Error
|
|
| | Just to explain a bit...
| | Physical RAM, of course, is the memory you have physically installed
in
| your system. In your case, you have 384MB. What happens when you use
more
| than this amount, Windows attempts to create RAM using your hard drive.
All
| RAM is is storage space. But, Windows accesses RAM at very high speeds,
in
| comparison to your hard drive. So, if its low on RAM, it make use of
your
| hard drive to make additional RAM... this call virtual RAM.
| |
| | By default, Windows modifies the size of your virtual RAM to whatever
it
| needs, constantly increasing or decreasing it to what it sees fit.
| Optionally, you can set the exact amount of virtual RAM that your system
| uses, which its believed to make your system more efficient. While I
| personally don't see the speed difference between the two, most people
(I
| believe) go with the option of manually configuring the virtual RAM.
Keep in
| mind, whatever is set as the virtual RAM is no longer available to be
used
| as hard drive storage unless you change it again. So, if you set 1GB to
act
| as virtual RAM, you now have a hard drive with 1GB less storage space.
| |
| | With that said, I would recommend manually configuring your setting.
| There's no harm done, and it might help with your problem. And, if it
| doesn't, you can always switch it back. With 384MB installed (same as I
have
| on one of my work computers) I would recommend doubling it. So... here's
| what you do:
| |
| | Go to START > and right-click on MY COMPUTER. Then, select PROPERTIES
>
| ADVANCED > PERFORMANCE SETTINGS > ADVANCED and then on the bottom where
it
| says VIRTUAL MEMORY you hit CHANGE. Your main C drive should be
highlighted
| on top. Make sure CUSTOM SIZE is checked, and change the MAXIMUM SIZE to
| 768. Then hit OK, and you'll have to restart the computer.
| |
| | See if that helps.
