-=PCTechTalk=- Re: Unable To Connect To Internet Sites

Yep. You would delete the ones that you want to allow. However, if this is
what most of these entries are like, then I would leave it alone. When I
gave you the IP address you should have been able to connect to C|Net no
problem, as the host file is skipped.

Let me explain.

When you type in an address in your address bar such as www.example.com, a
certain path is followed as the internet understands only a number address
such as 123.43.43.1. This is where DNS servers come into play. They
resolve name domains to their actual IPs. But before your request goes to a
DNS server it checks the host file for information, hence those entries
cause ads not to be displayed as it resolves the 123banner sites to
127.0.0.1. Now if you type in an IP address from the beginning there is no
need of the host file or a DNS server. The internet routers have everything
that they need to bring you to the website you wish to go to.

So the problem should lie elsewhere.

Thanks for the response. The host file I downloaded
from Gorilla has entries in it....I listed an example
below...I don't know what the original looks like but,
everything that is directed to go to a site with popup
ads etc are actually routed to the local host 127.0.0

Here are some examples: # 123Banners

127.0.0.1 123banners.com
127.0.0.1 control.123banners.com
127.0.0.1 ftp.123banners.com
127.0.0.1 ftp.control.123banners.com
127.0.0.1 www.123banners.com

This is just a sample of what's listed in the host
file I now have. So, to edit this would I just get
rid of everything or what?

Thanks for the advice.
