Steve,
    A lot of Linux users claim that no security is needed, but those folks 
are already adept at configuring the OS for max security without them.  For 
those just getting started, I suggest you run them until you KNOW for 
yourself that you are secure enough without.  Getting to that point is going 
to take some time, some experimenting and a LOT of patience, my friend. 
:O)

    You may find that Ubuntu already has those things bundled with it.  If 
not, many packages (including AV & firewalls) are available through the 
operating system's packages utility.
