I had that trouble around last Christmas.  A blaster worm was in my
SysRestore.  After disabling SysRestore and restarting then re-enabling
SysRestore, everything was OK.  How your friend lost everything seems to
indicate that she did something else - that she should not have done!
Just disable it, restart, and don't forget to re-enable it.  It is a
good idea to ask Sysrestore to set a new restore point straight away.
That will be the only restore point that you will have. .
