For the occasional print, you can use any printer you so choose. Most of the
modern printers out there (like within the last 3 to 4 years) can print quality
photos, many that are hard to tell at first glance that its your normal printer
as opposed to a photo lab.
But, if you need to print a lot of pictures, you SAVE MONEY by uploading your
photos to an online service and order prints that way. I use WinkFlash.com and
Shutterfly.com. Both are free to sign up, and store unlimited amounts of
photos in your account. So, this is also a good backup system for your pics.
WinkFlash is a bit better, cause the prints (last I checked) were cheaper, and
the shipping is always a flat 99 cents no matter how many photos you have
printed (shutterfly bases the shipping on the number of photos you order).
When you print the photos yourself, you waste a lot of ink, and the image photo
you get costs more than the online photo spots. Plus, the ink from your printer
is usually no where close to archival qualities. There are some exceptions...
some of the Epson printers and I think even some of the photo Sony printers.
They use special ink, which costs more, and has a better "shelf-life". I think
the Epson Photomate has like a 50-100 year life on the photos.
Point is... if you're gonna print a few shots here and there, do it home. If
you need more than a few, it pays to use the online photo shops. Not to
mention, the benefits of having off-site backups of all your photos.
