Mine automatically shows thumbnail view in folders where I have pictures ...
I think you can make yours do it by going to (in Windows XP) setting the
option to "remember each folder's view settings" (put a checkmark beside it)
when you go to Tools, Folder Options, and View, under "advanced settings"

This is how I have mine set anyway and when I open my images folder it
automatically displays thumbnails, although other folders may not -- so I am
assuming that it is this setting that probably makes the difference. You
would of course, have to specify thumbnail view the first time, but after
that when you go back it should be that way. Try it!
