I believe it saves and restores more than just the registry.  I think it is
a snapshot of the registry and all system files and folders (drivers,
locations of "my documents", yada, yada).  It holds several of these and
some are created automatically (like after a windows hotfix)..  It won't
save or remove any data files since the resore point, so if you have any
downloaded files or critical documents, back them up to be sure.
