I will have to say that it depends on how the manufacturer made your Recovery disk set. Some may perform a 'repair' install of the OS while others may replace it. A replacement means wiping the drive and recopying the system as it was when it left the factory, so everything that's not backed up is lost. Regardless of what you're disk is 'supposed to do', I will storngly recommend making a backup before proceeding. In fact, that suggestion goes for just about ANY major operation you choose to do with a system.
