Two suggestions.....

Use the list of keywords below to search Help and/or Google for
explanations of what they are and what they do. Networking is an
integral part of XP and likely can not be uninstalled or removed
without damaging XP and probably interfering with your connecting to
the internet (which is nothing more than a very extensive network).

Log on to Amazon.com and buy a book on Networking with WinXP.

Key words:

Remote Assistance
Remote Access Auto Connection Manager
Remote Access Connection Manager
Telephony
Internet Connection Firewall
Remote Desktop Help Session Manager
Remote Procedure Call
Remote Registry
Routing and Remote Access
Network
Network Connection

The icon that keeps showing up in the task bar when I open OE says
"Windows Messenger" when I put my cursor over it to find out what it
is. That is why I keep referring to it that way.=20
  =20
Found the place in OE to stop it from launching when I open OE.
Thanks a bunch.

If Remote Assistance is the one that lets another person connect
to your computer then that is what I want to also disable. I don't
see it listed in Add/Remove Programs or Add/Remove Windows
Components nor in the list of services under Administrative Tools.
  =20
There is something called Remote Access Auto Connection Manager
and Remote Access Connection Manager that I found in Control
Panel/Administrative Tools/Services when I was looking for Windows
Messenger there. When I click on Remote Access Auto Connection
Manager its Dependencies say that the service depends on Remote
Access Connection Manager and Telephony. Nothing depends on RAACM.
The Description says it creates a connection to a remote network.
When I click on Remote Access Connection Manager, its Dependencies
say the service depends on Telephony and that Internet Connection
Firewall and Remote Access Auto Connection Manager depend on this
service (RACM). The Description says it creates a network
connection.
  =20
There are other things listed there like Remote Desktop Help
Session Manager, Remote Procedure Call (RPC), Remote Registry,
Routing and Remote Access. Remote Assistance is listed in the
description of one or more of these but I don't see it listed itself
in the list of services.
  =20
I don't want any Remote anything enabled on my computer. I also
don't want to haphazardly start disabling or uninstalling (if
possible) things without understanding the consequences. I deleted a
file once before that I thought was suspicious and ended up
completely messing up my hard drive.

***MSN*** Messenger is what opens, or tries to open when you open
Outlook Express. In OE go to Tools/Options and unselect launch
messenger when you open OE. If that option is not anywhere to be
found, then Messenger has been disabled or uninstalled.=20

***Windows *** Messenger is the tool used by SPAMMERs to get all
those "official" looking pop-up ads onto your computer. If you
installed and used the Shoot the Messenger utility correctly (and it
sounds like you did) then you will have no more problems with that
until you do another format and install.

When you said you wanted to get rid of Remote Access did you mean to
say Remote Assistance? I don't know what Remote Access is, but
Remote Assistance is a utility that allows you to have a trusted
person connect to your computer across the internet to help you
resolve problems on your computer.

Witch, the link you sent me appears to have the same information as
provided in Shoot The Messenger as well as the steps that came up
when I searched the archives. Thank you.

Jo Ann & Don, I downloaded Shoot The Messenger a couple times and it
keeps saying "Messenger Service is not installed on this system".
It took a couple times for me to realize that it was referring to
Windows Messenger and not telling me that Shoot the Messenger had
downloaded incorrectly. Thank you for the info.

I had already unchecked the box for Windows Messenger in Add/Remove
Windows Components Wizard in Add/Remove Programs. I just looked
again and it is still unchecked. When I go into Administrative
Tools, Services (also looked into Component Services) I can't find
anything called "Messenger" or "Windows Messenger" but the icon
still shows up in the task bar when I open Outlook Express.
It's like 2 people together, has a red circle with an "X" in it.
When I put my cursor over the icon to get the little message telling
me the name of the item it represents, it says "Window Messenger -
Not signed in".=20

I'm not trying to be a pain in the butt or cause problems for
anyone, I just don't want anything on my computer that could
potentially let someone in. Right now I reformat the hard drive
every couple weeks to clean it and start over but this process is
getting old and takes a long time to do. I have Norton's AV as well
as Avast installed and SpyBot and Ad-Aware. There is also another
item I want off my computer (Remote Access) but haven't figured out
how to get rid of it yet.

Thanks again,

Wendy
