Hi Jan,
I found this freeware utility
'shutdown.exe' written by Andrej Budga and available here;
http://www.budja.com/shutdown/
Shutdown.exe is a simple command line utility that can:
Log Off the current user
Shutdown (Turn Off) the computer
Restart the computer
Hibernate the computer (note that hibernation has to be enabled!)
Put the computer into Stand By (Sleep)
You also have the option to force the action and thus end all running
programs without saving data.
Shutdown.exe has been designed for Microsoft Windows XP. It might also work
on other operating systems (like Windows 2000), but you should not rely on
it.
Legal stuff
Shutdown.exe is FREEWARE. You can use it on as many computers as you want
for FREE. If you want to distribute it on your web server, FTP server, CD or
any other media please nofity me beforehand. It would also be nice if you
reported your experience with the program, but you don't have to if you
don't want.
If you use shutdown.exe on your corporate network please let me know.
All comments, suggestions and bug reports are welcomed!!
Short instructions for novice users
1. Download the shutdown.exe and save it in a folder on your hard drive (for
instance c:\shutdown).
2. Click Run on the Start menu.
3. Type cmd.exe and click OK or press ENTER.
4*. In the Command Prompt go to the folder with shutdown.exe utility
(c:\shutdown).
5. Type shutdown.exe to get detailed information about supported switches.
++ There is more on the web site.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. I have always put a shut down
button on the screen of my students as I saves them a few steps in closing.
Well, one of my seniors told me her computer is not always shutting down
using the conventional way going through the start button. I told her I
would put the shut down shortcut on her desktop to see if that brought her
different results. But she is using XP Professional & my shortcut did not
work. Could someone tell me the directions needed to put it on her desktop
using OS of XP?
Thank you,
Jan
