O.K. guys, here it is. I copied both my correspondence to them and their
reply so you can see if it sounds like the same thing. I did not have to
contact them again as the first thing I tried worked:
Here it is:
Dear Joyce,
Thank you for contacting HP Total Care.
I understand that you are receiving an error message stating 'error 1706
no valid source can be found' when trying to scan from your HP
Photosmart 3210xi all-in-one.
I do apologise for the inconvenience caused to you with this issue. I
will certainly do my best to resolve this issue as you are a valuable
customer of HP. However, it may take few e-mail interactions to resolve
this issue completely. Your patience is appreciated.
Joyce, to resolve the error, "No valid source could be found", please
follow the steps I have given below
=== Steps to be followed ===
* Insert the CD-Rom and cancel the installation.
* Right click 'X:', where 'X:'is a CD-Rom drive letter and click on
'Open' to see the contents.
* Now double click on 'Set up' folder.
* Now double click on 'aio_scan' folder to open it.
* Locate the file 'aio_scan.msi' and right click on it and select
'repair' option under it.
* Again right click on the same file and click on 'install' option.
* Follow the steps 1 and 2 for location 'X:/ setup/'
* Now double click on 'scan' folder.
* Locate the file 'scan.msi', right click it and select 'repair' and
again right click and select 'install' option.
Now try scanning again. If you find the issue persist, please get back
to us with the screen shot of the error message by following the steps
It would help me to provide you with an accurate solution if you could
send me a screenshot of the error message you received.
You can paste the screenshot(s) in a Microsoft Word document and attach
it with your reply. Please ensure that the attachment does not exceed
2 MB in size.
To save a screenshot in a Microsoft Word document, perform these steps:
1. Make sure that the window you want to capture is the active window.
This would be the window where the error message is displayed.
2. Simultaneously press the Alt and the PrtScn (or Print Screen)
keys.
3. Click Start, Programs, and then Microsoft Word.
4. Click the Edit menu and then click Paste. The screenshot is now
pasted in the Word document.
5. From the File menu, click the "Save As" option and save the file on
the Desktop.
NOTE: You can save multiple screenshots in a single Microsoft
Word document.
The screenshot is now saved on your computer and is ready to be sent as
an e-mail attachment.
I want to be sure the troubleshooting steps I provided resolve the
issue. If the issue continues, please reply to this message with the
results. We will be glad to assist you further.
You may receive an e-mail survey regarding your e-mail support
experience. We would appreciate your feedback.

error_message : Error 1706. No valid source could be found. The windows
installer cannot continue
problem_description : A Windows Installer box pops up every time I scan
and at every start up of my computer. It says, "Preparing to Install.
Please wait while windows configures scan." Then "Gathering required
Information" and a bar appears. Then "The feature you are trying to use
is on a CDROM or removable disk that is not available. Insert the scan
disk and click o.k. " Then "Error 1706. No valid source could be
found. The Windows installer cannot continue."
I have to cancel numerous times before this goes away. My scanner works
fine after I wade through the popup Windows Installer thing.
I have gone to the driver and software site but when I click on Check to
see if I need any of these, the window comes up blank.
How can I tell if I need a new driver?
Please help|
Joyce
trouble_shooting : I have run virus scan, Spybot and AdAware and all is
well there. I have googled the error number and have found the Windows
Installer CleanUp Utility and it lists a large number of programs and
software that has been installed by Windows Installer. I am afraid to
use it| Hoping there is a patch or some easier solution. I have
downloaded and installed the latest version of Windows Installer. No
help.
setting_changes : None that I can think of. I can't say with certainty
but I think this occurred the first time I tried to scan something.
Everything else works without this installer popping up. I tried the
copy function and no pop ups there. And, of course, I have been printing
with it from the time I purchased it. This started in August, went away
for a while and then started popping up again a few weeks ago. It is
fairly easy to cancel it out upon computer start up. Takes maybe 4 or 5
cancels. But when I start a scan it is very persistent about wanting to
install something.
