I've bought licenses that were for a specific number of "seats" - my MS Office
2003 is a good example. It allows three installs....no matter what machines
it's installed on. I'm told that after the three installs, I will have to call
MS and explain why I have another install.
Having said that, I bought two (3) seat MS Office licenses from a seller on
e-Bay. The seller said they had been installed once. I bought them and
installed them on computers in OH and AZ (that would be the second install for
both licenses). I later installed them both again when I installed
Vista.....still no problem, they both installed fine. Next I deleted Vista
and
reinstalled Win XP and reinstalled the licenses. I expected to have to call MS
- no such thing happened....they installed. Then about 6 months later (just
this month), I bought new computers for both OH and AZ and installed the
licenses again. Still no problem.
This experience leads me to believe that there must be some timing in the code
-- something like if there is no install for 6 months, the next install isn't
counted. If memory serves me right, MS operating systems work that way as well.
Symantec changed their way of handling it last year. Now, when you install a
Norton product on another computer, it works fine, but the "days remaining" on
the license stays the same as the original install.
