Thanks, Kathryn, and to the rest who sent in suggestions.  I find I have a
loose connection-- I reset the end connected to the scanner and the light
came on for a while then went off again.  Tomorrow I will check other end of
connection before I try the other suggestions.  The way I am set up, it is
difficult to get to the connections as it  takes some moving of furniture.
