I am NOT speaking from personal experience, so I won't claim this is the 
answer.

A customer reported the same problem to us. As I did not see it, nor what 
else he had attached to it, I suggested he just shut down totally and 
reboot. It worked for a few days and another lockup. Then he told us he was 
getting a copy of everything he had scanned. Somewhere in setup he had it 
set to print  a copy of all his scans. That fails if the printer is turned 
off and the "Twain is in use" trying to print the last scan.

Solution: UNcheck auto-printing of all scans.


Now this IS from personal experience:
Do you have a digital camera? It is also a Twain device. Make sure you are 
not attempting to import from the camera at the same time you are scanning 
on your flat-top scanner.
