Ok, these two things could be completely unrelated, but here is what I
tried. I have Googled (not goggled!) finding a way to turn off the sidebar
during startup which did not bring any results (or I didn't search deeply
enough). So, I did another search for safe mode freezes. The problems that
I ran across were those that could not boot into Windows normally or in safe
mode. So, I looked at the system configuration tool and decided to set it
to boot to safe mode there and see what happens. So, after restarting I was
successfully able to boot into safe mode (and no sidebar). So, I went back
to the configuration utility to uncheck boot into safe mode and restarted.
After I restarted, I was unable to connect to the internet wirelessly. I
tried repair the wireless connection, unplugging the router and plugging it
back in and nothing worked. I did not try to connect wired, so I don't know
if that would've worked. So, I enlisted the aid of the trusty system
restore and that restored my connectivity.
I just find it odd that just by booting into safe mode (with minimal support
I think it was?) would foul up the wireless connection. I think my laptop
is haunted...
