Oh...I always wondered about that. My first desktop that was the native
resolution, so the only difference was the lack of color. I often wondered
about that.

The resolution drops down to the default because the video drivers are not
loaded when in Safe Mode. That makes everything look really big on larger
screens and there's little you can do about it since the correct drivers
aren't loaded.
