There are methods for dealing with many of Vista's quirks, but they did go
overboard on some of the security 'features' built into Vista. Windows 7
looks like it's going to have an "XP Compatability Mode" that will alleviate
many of these headaches.
I plan to get Vista installed as a regular OS here soon. The moment I do,
I'll be researching all of the ways folks have gotten around the types of
issues you mentioned. The ones that work will be added to whatever advice I
try to give to help people like you who are also relatively new to those
quirks. So, no promises, but at least you won't be alone. ;)
