Lionel.....System Restore should work, but have you installed 
the<WinMeUpdate  209700usam.exe> which is the essential update to 
restore the SYSTEM RESTORE Utility?  It's on MS Website. I suggest you 
get it, if you don't already have it, and save it so that if you need it 
after MS withdraw support you will not be left high and dry.

I have given this info to several WinMe users and their system restore 
utility has burst back into life.  It seems I might be too late if you 
have already done the reformat, but this just might have saved you all 
that work.  I am still in the process of re-installing everything since 
I did a reformat recently. You have my sympathy - it is no mean task.
