-=PCTechTalk=- Re: START UP MENU

When doing a search in Google, you would type in the name of the file with the
extension in quotes. You don't have to do it in quotes, but sometimes it helps.
So, one of the processes I have running on my system is NPROTECT.EXE so in
Google I would type:
"NPROTECT.EXE"
with the quotes.
And, it would return several results. In this case, although nothing outright
says that this file running in the background is Nortons, it all says that the
file is part of Nortons, and I know Nortons is running in the background, so I
assume its good. Its an investigative process. After awhile, doing it so much,
you start recognizing what's good and what's not. Most people know NPROTECT.EXE
is Nortons as well as NAVAP32.EXE and a few others.

The running apps you mentioned:

LOAD POWER PROFILE... I'm assuming you're using a laptop. If so, leave these
on, both of them. If not a laptop, remove these.

Memory Meter, TVTMD, and Web Assistant are spyware. Get SpyBot and do a scan of
your whole system. SpyBot is available for free at:
http://www.safer-networking.org/

Power Strip I believe is necessary for a laptop, but not 100% sure on that one.

Although Trojans and Viruses are two different things, they're both caught by
Nortons. The important thing is your virus definitions need to be up-to-date.
If not up-to-date, then you might as well not have any scanner at all. Be sure
to update Nortons at least once a week. I check for updates every few days.
And, you can even have Nortons update automatically without user intervention.

If Nortons says you're clean, you probably are. But, there's no reason not to
double-check. You can use a free online scanner such as Trend Micro's online
scanner at:
http://www.trendmicro.com

Get the latest SpyBot and run that as well. And, I would also recommend a scan
with Ad-Aware, which is also attainable for free. The website can be found with
Google. I think its Lavasoftusa.com or something like that. No, not necessary
to use Ad-Aware if you use SpyBot, but doesn't hurt for the extra protection.

Good morning, I have been reading the items on the start up menus and I
thought about my own and went to check it out. I found 29 items listed on the
startup menu. Some of them I do not know what they are. When I go to google,
do I need to type in the whole file name to get a description of what they are.
I did do that to a couple of strange ones like Load Power Profile (which is
listed 2x on the menu), Load=, Memory Meter, TVTMD, Power Strip, Web Assistant.
Can you tell me what these are and if they should stay or go.
Also, when I start up my computer, there is a little box that comes up that
says
Error! Could not download application! Please try again and then a box that
says ok. I always click on the OK and it goes away but I have no idea what
application it is talking about. How would I go about finding what this is.

And on the techie side, I am not to literate so this may sound like a dumb
question (but I have always been told there is not question that is dumb)
anyway, how do I find out if I have a Trojan worm on my computer. I do a scan
with Norton and it usually comes up clean but a couple of times, it has found
things which I quarantine, does that take care of them. Does Norton "catch"
Trojans???
I love this site and thank you all so much for your expertise.
  I have a HP Pavilion running win98.
