I don't recall the exact circumstances, but they rated it Important because
Vista is already guarded against getting hit by it when the defaults are in
place. I think the issue was with UAC, but could be wrong. My
understanding is that if the default 'whatever it was' had been changed
(turning off UAC, as one possible example), then the system becomes just as
vulnerable as any XP system to this infection and the patch becomes
Critical. the problem is that Windows Updates doesn't check for the
defaults that matter to this. So, if a user or an app installed by the user
modifies the specific setting in question, they will still not get the patch
automatically installed. I see it as a really bad decision on MS's part for
not making it mandatory for everyone. Of course, all of that is based on my
understanding of the worm, the patch and the update mechanism in Vista and I
may be missing an important part of the big picture within any of them. I
just want you folks to be as safe as possible from whatever is going to
happen on April 1st.
