Archiving it means downloading the huge IT version (like you just did) and 
storing it for possible repeated use.  On the other hand, using Windows 
Updates to get it would have allowed MS to send your system a much smaller 
version more specific to your operating system's needs, but you don't get to 
save it since everything is done in the background.

Make sure you have ALL possible Critical Updates already installed before 
you run SP3.
