-=PCTechTalk=- Re: Restore Points

Cindy,
When I first read your question, I was immediately struck by how little
I've even thought about System Restore since its introduction. Having been
at this computer craze many, many years before System Restore was even a
thought in someone's head (I started working with computers back in 1982 -
GASP!), I had long ago developed my own methods of keeping my data safe and
my computer spry and agile. With every passing year, those methods are made
easier by better written programs and newer ideas such as the modified
Windows installation CD thread I've recently had with Don.

As a result, I seem to have severe difficulties remembering that it's
available to me. I honestly haven't even taken a good look at System
Restore or relied on it for anything, with one exception last year. That
exception was brought about by a bad driver install that really made a mess
of things. When my normal approach to these types of things failed to
produce a positive result <GRRR!>, I remembered that it was there and tried
taking the system back to just before the offending driver had been
installed. After what felt like hours, the computer finally rebooted and
told me that the restore had failed so nothing had been changed. Undaunted,
I opened up the utility and tried the restore point just before the failed
one (one day earlier). That one only took about 15 minutes and I was
extremely happy to see that it not only took, it also fixed the problem. It
also removed a couple of things I wanted to keep, but that was easily
rectified by reinstalling those items.

So, perhaps I'm not the best person to answer this one, since it's not a
normal part of my computing repair habits. By NO means should that be taken
as a negative towards the use of System Restore. It's just that I can't
seem to wrap my head around something that makes things THAT easy. lol

Oh, and in case you're interested, I recall turning the utility off on
my own systems a few years back. At some point (and for a reason unknown to
myself), I stopped doing that and have allowed it to make restore points
whenever it wants. If I hadn't made that change, I definitely would have
had to reformat/reinstall everything as a result of that bad driver issue.
So, I suppose I can honestly say that if you have the hard drive space, let
it do what it does. If you like the idea that it can 'save your bacon' at
times, go ahead and get into the habit of creating a new point before you do
anything risky. It just might come in super handy someday,
:O)

Peace,
GMan
