No joy in NJ tonight. I uninstalled the scanner software, disabled Norton,
reinstalled scanner software - receive the Java Virtual Machine cannot be
loaded message again and of course the scanner did not work. On to the next
step?

There's a chance that removing that older Java (6 update 7) will also remove
the limitations you're seeing. On the other hand, it may be some leftover
from the Office 2007 attempt that's getting in the way. Try removing the
older Java and see what happens. If that doesn't work, move onto
reinstalling the scanner software with your AV disabled. If all of that
fails to bring you joy, we can try removing ALL Office products, cleaning up
the system and then reinstalling Office 2000.

Peace,
