    It's not the icons themselves that use up resources, it's the need for 
the system to keep track of all of them at all times (so they appear when 
you minimize all other windows) that saps Windows.  It's not a lot of drain, 
but it's significant enough for me to have mentioned back when it was 
brought up.  If you've moved them into their own folder on the Desktop, 
Windows will now only need to keep track of that one folder icon, so you've 
just given most of the sapping back to the OS for use elsewhere.

    On the other hand, if you "run" programs or utilities from the desktop, 
they'll use up a LOT more resources than they would have if they were in 
their own folders.  For items like these, give them their own folder 
somewhere within your Program Files folder area and add a shortcut to the 
QuickLaunch bar so you can run it with a single click.
