I prefer to activate and get a ton of use out of the Quick Launch bar.  If 
it's not alreayd showing, right click on the Taskbar and go to Toolbars > 
Quick Launch to make it available.  I use the left mouse button to grab and 
drag the top of the Taskbar upward until it shows a few extra rows, I 
rearrange the locations of the Quick Launch and Task Button areas (to set 
one section above the other) and then set the entire Start/Taskbar to 
Autohide when I'm not using it.  I then populate the Quick Launch area with 
shortcuts to all of my most used programs, text files, websites, hard drive 
locations, etc..  The result is that I normally have the desktop showing 
over the entire monitor, but I also have one click access to nearly 
everything I need from Quick Launch.
