GMan, 
ok, I assume we're still talking about W98SE here. In WMe I have those same 
choices under the Network applet and mine is set on 'Client For Windows 
Networking' and I don't have that log-on problem  (I initiated this thread for 
a friend).  So does that mean Me is the opposite of 98SE, or might some other 
things be in play here?

      Yes, and No.  I'm specifically talking about the 'Client For Windows
  Networking' component inside Control Panel's Network applet.  It's this
  component that adds that Log In function to Windows' boot up sequence.

  on a 9X machine on a network ??
