-=PCTechTalk=- Re: Quirky Outlook Express Mail Problem?

Hi Cajun:

I use OL, not OE... recent replies have tried to help and
show that and others have experienced this problem, and
cured it by using later OS.

I haven't had a problem with OL for past two years.
Perhaps U can change to OL?

Anyway; perhaps these feeble attempts might help or
trigger something in the mind of another person.

1. Apparently you have more than one account.
Have you checked to see that the desired account is
designated as the one in use when the problem arises?

2. Have you checked properties with ISP to insure
all entries there are ok. Perhaps refreshing the
info while ISP tells you what to enter might help.

3. Can you connect to server on ISP web page using IE?
If so, do you experience the same problem when connected
for extended periods of time? If the problem doesn't
appear then it's probably something in OE... if it does,
it could be ISP mail server or something in your
computer. At one time I had two tcp/ip entries in two
win95 computers that were causing interrupted video and
other problems. A sharp tech at manufacturer of the
computer suggested the computer was checking both tcp/ip
entries... it took four months to clear that problem!
It occurred on two computers when I loaded the frog
screen saver. That may be why some think that screen
saver contains a virus.

4. Have you ever determined how regular it occurs?
The following may do that.

5. Does it function ok when you are controlling the
download?
e.g.; you set it to poll every 10 min; Then:
you initiate download every 5 min several times,
then initiate downloads every 6 min a few times...
then 7 min, then 8 min, then just before it polls due
to 10 min setting...

If it fails at any time to properly check mail, check
the settings to determine what changed.

6. Try testing the link as described in #5 by sending
a short email to yourself at varying and increasing
intervals. You *know* email is on the server just waiting
to be downloaded.

7. Have you checked resources when it occurs and
compared that value to resources available when it is ok?
How about free memory?
Is virtual memory set to allow Windows to control it?

8. Are you using power management for hard disk and other
things in your computer? If so... you might try turning
that off for a few hours...

9. Are you using a screen saver, or blanking the screen?
If so, you might turn that off for a few hours...

10. Have you recently checked for Ads, viruses, trojans?
etc?

11. And last, but not least...
have you emptied Windows Temp file as prescribed by
Dian and Linda?

When the trouble is fixed, I sure would like to
know how it was solved!

j

I used to think it was the mail server also, but why would I immediately
begin to download mail 2 minutes later after rebooting?

I don't use OE but whenever I get a message like that it's because my
ISP's mail server is having problems. <shrug>>>>
