I'll reply ON-LIST, in case anyone else has a similar question.
If you're referring to the name of the file, the one that is shown while you
have Quicken running (the name of the file is listed all the way at the top
in the title bar) then you can actually change that. I'm using Quicken 2003
Premier. If you're using an older version, it should be similar. On top, if
you click on FILE > FILE OPERATIONS > RENAME, you can actually rename the
file that you're currently using. Likewise, after the file is renamed,
everytime you make a backup, it will now restore with that name.

The backup files are also the name of the file. So, for example, my file is
called CHARLIE. When I make a backup, the backup creates these 4 files:

Charlie.QDF
Charlie.QEL
Charlie.QPH
Charlie.QSD

These are the 4 files created for a backup.

When I restore this backup, the name of the file will be Charlie. NOW... if
I decide I want to rename these, I can rename the backup files to this:

Bob.QDF
Bob.QEL
Bob.QPH
Bob.QSD

Now when I restore this backup, with the new renaming I did, you will notice
that the file is no longer called Charlie, but rather Bob. The top title-bar
will say Bob as the file name.

So, you can actually do the renaming two ways. Either you can do FILE > FILE
OPERATIONS > RENAME and use the new name you want to use (you select the
current file, and then the new name for it), or you can also just change the
name of the backup and restore again.

Using the first method, after you renamed the file, you can then backup and
have a backup with the new name.

If you want to change the name on all the previous backups you have, then
just go ahead and change the name on all the backups. Just make sure each
backup has all 4 of these files using the same prefix before the dot
(xxx.QSD, etc).

And, as always, before you do any of this, since you may still be unsure if
you're doing it right, just backup anyway to another location, just incase
you mess it up.

To anser your second question... if you do restore from the original floppy
you had, the name of the backup files will be what the name of your files
are.

Hope this helps.

Hi Troth, I need to ask you something else about Quicken: when I did my
reformat, I used a program called eazy-backup. When we reinstalled
Quicken,
instead of 'restoring' from the floppy, my friend put the backup in, so my
files are now all named backup with various numbers after them. My
question: if I delete Quicken and then reinstall the program and use my
floppy to restore will that work and bring the files back like they were
before (i.e. minus the 'backup' word)? After my frist few entries
following
the reformat I went to back up to the floppy and it said it was full, so I
used a new floppy. If I do the restore like I just mentioned, I would
lose
those last few entries, but I printed the register so I could re-enter
them.
Do you think that would work, or should I just let them go and be named
"backup", I guess it's not really that important what they're called. I
just
wanted them like they were before. You can write me off-list if you like
at
  redowl@xxxxxxxxxxxx . TIA--Glo
