The first thing I would do is, with the system off, remove the physical
printer. Then, fire it up and remove the printer's drivers from the system
and then shut down. Reconnect the physical printer and boot up into
Windows. Windows will probably load up a generic driver for it, but you
should be ready with the latest driver available from the maker (HP).
Install the latest drivers and reboot and then try printing again. If that
doesn't fix it completely (and I'm pretty sure it's a driver issue more than
anything else), you'll have no choice but to suspect the cartridges.
Since this printer belongs to your friend, ask her if she has a replacement
cartridge. If not, tell her it's needed before it can print out her
request.
