Howdy Hank
Just to let you know, we have a 4 puter LAN in the house. (3 desktops and a
laptop) The little woman's is the gateway to the internet and hers runs a
400 MHz 98se, mine is an 1800 AMD and the third desktop is a hoped up 233 to
a 266 and the laptop is 1.8 Pen if I remember correctly. I am also running 5
different OS's. (XP Pro on the laptop (Just took off home and updated to
Pro, cost $10 academic version, isn't school wonderful) Mine has two HD's
each are dual booted. The one I use most has 98se and win2k, the other and
the laptop has XP Pro and Linux 9. The 266 has Linux 8.) Hers handles
everything nicely when we are running 3 puters on the net. However she did
say after I got the tution check in, she would like on a little faster. Well
there goes the table saw. Anyway, if your not hammering out web pages like a
rabbit, the speed does suite you, as you said speed was not factor. If your
considering XP in the future, then you might want to rethink the puter
situation. That is cause XP gets kind of picky about the equipment you have.
You can go to MS web site and run a check on you equipment capability for XP
if you desire. That might give you some direction. At present, I would
suggest you consider a larger HD in your present machine, depending on how
much you are using for the web pages and storage for them. In any event you
could put the one you have on a network with the new one. Just a thought.
XP Pro is very difficult to get on the LAN network as it does not really
like being second in command (a client) to her 98se. It wants to be boss.
The XP home version that was on the laptop was not quite so particular by
kind of picky.
I am thinking of building her one as I kind of don't like the idea of
getting locked into one of the name brands even if the total cost is a
little cheaper for them. Plus I don't know what I am getting in the dang
thing. Not to mention, all they will give you is recovery disks.
bbbbbbrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Life is what happens in between plans.
