Gman,
There are three drives, hard disk, CD Rom and floppy drive. I did try
several cables including a brand new one on the HD. I tried the HD in
another known good computer. It spins up but won't boot. Gives the message
Windows didn't start, option to start normally or in Safe Mode, won't start
either way. Bad hard drive? Maybe. Tried the hard drive from the known good
computer in the problem one, same boot disk failure message. This time also,
get a floppy disk failure, which was working before. No CD Rom seen.
This is long, but let me update you from the start. This is my niece's
computer I'm trying to fix. When I first turned it on, it would run a few
seconds, turn off, then start again over and over. Got into the bios and it
was giving the message CPU speed incorrectly set. Was showing it at 2000 mgh
didn't notice the multipliers at this time. Changed to default settings and
it booted right up. 768 mb of RAM, 80 gig hard drive( that I had to connect)
acted like it had never seen the motherboard and started loading drivers (
had Win98 on it) I used her XP disk to format and load XP Pro on it.
Everything seemed fine, except it hung one more time with the incorrect CPU
speed thing, set default ( which by the way didn't change the 2000 speed)
noticed this time the multiplier was 20X and CPU frequency was 100. All was
fine again. She sent me her Norton Ghost disk 9.0 which she had never used.
I installed it, looked simple and I made an image of the drive on a DVD. It
was filthy inside so I blew it out with compressed air. When I tried to
boot it again, all went to hell. I think that brings us up to date. After
seeing your post about Ghost, I wonder if it has nuked it. What do you
think?

Jo Ann,
I rememebr a couple of times I tried a different cable and eventually
figured out that the 'new' cable didn't work either. I'm still not clear on
how many drives we're talking about. If it's one HD and one optical, are
they both on the same cable? If so and you have another 'new' cable that's
never been used, try that. Otherwise, try the HD in the other system. I'm
reasonably sure it'll work and we'll have to keep trying things.
Peace,
GMan
