-=PCTechTalk=- Re: Need the Most Efficient & Effective for Viral Removal

So when I buy a new computer which will come with the OS on it I am sure,
that is a good time? Also, I did not know you could copy the OS to another
partition. I know I cant copy or use the recover CD or whatever comes with
the new computer to put the OS on anotherh computer.

It seems years ago, like about 7-8 even my brother showed me how to do
partitions back when I had windows 95 or maybe 98 but I forgot. Getting him
to take time out to come by and show me is not a piece of cake ;0...so I
may try it via your expertise of teaching via email ;0

Cristy,
There are two approaches and I use both, depending on circumstances.

The first is ONLY for a clean install on a new hard drive or one that's
been wiped clean. For this, I use the partitioning abilities of the Windows
installation CD/DVD to create the initial partition as needed. I usually
create a first partition that's somewhere between 20-35GB in size, depending
on who owns the computer I'm working on and what they plan to do with it.
Larger apps (or tons of apps) means more space will be needed. Once the OS
install is complete, all drivers have been installed (including motherboard
drivers), all security apps have been installed and updated & there are no
more critical Windows Updates to get, I install a 3rd party partitioning app
and finish the job of making the various partitions they want/need.

The second method is reserved for already existing drives that contain
an operating system the person doesn't want to wipe. Simply put, I back up
their entire hard drive, install the same 3rd party partitioning app and go
to town slicing up the free space that's available on that already existing
drive. When I'm done, I show them how to Move files/folders from their main
partition over to the other ones and let them have fun organizing their
stuff. When they're done, I often come back and make that first partition
smaller since so many larger items (like the MP3 collection) are no longer
there. I can then offer to install a second instance of Windows to use as a
clean Gaming platform or, at the very least, to serve as a simple way to
allow them to recover from a catastrophy on their main drive (for instance,
boot into the second OS and run an AV scan on the main partition to remove
most infections easily).

As you're well aware from watching me discuss topics like this, there's
a lot more to this stuff. Still, it should give you some things to consider
when you're ready.

Peace,
Gman
