Many thanks for your input, Don. XP's own rename facility is
something I'd never used (and have to confess I had forgotten about),
because I need something which will cater to maximum backwards-
compatibility (in other words, no space characters or brackets
allowed.)
IrfanView worked like a treat, though. I've done batch conversions on
image files before, but had never even considered using it purely for
renaming. Problem solved!
