Try using the rename in WinXP's context menu. I rename 2 to 3,000 files at
a time using it. The new file name will look like this: filename
(nnnn).xxx where filename is any legal name, nnnn is a numerical sequence
number and xxx is the chosen extension.
You can also use IrfanView's Batch rename which is a bit more flexible with
the new name. There are other utilities available but these two have always
worked fine for me.

In the past I have heartily recommended www.Unlimited-mail.com as an
excellent paid email service with superior customer support. Unfortunately,
I can no longer do that. Apparently they have grown too large to continue
providing customer service like they used to. E-mails to their support
department regarding a specific problem have been ignored for several weeks
now. Also, the email server suffers from frequent problems that last as
little as a few minutes to as much as several days. I would strongly
encourage everyone to consider other email services... especially the new
Google mail which is rolling out free POP/SMTP access for their members.

Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- Multiple file rename utility
Hi, folks,
(and a belated Merry Christmas to all)
...looking for a utility which will rename large numbers of multiple
files at once. Preferably something which places itself in Windows
Explorer's context menu, like the old PC Magazine tool, MultiRen.
I've been using MultiRen for a long time, but recently found it
crashed upon attempting to rename tens of thousands of files in XP.
Something about a conflict with the DrWatson process, which results
in Explorer freezing. I don't think the software author ever intended
it to be used on post-Windows 98 machines.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions,
Faustus
