Hi Glo,
The easiest thing to do would be to replace it. If you are adventurous,
then it couldn't hurt to try and fix it before giving up and getting a new
one. If it gets stuck at times and/or jumpy at times, it is a good
candidate for trying to fix by cleaning the insides. You probably have an
optical mouse so I'll skip the mouse ball.
If your mouse is USB, you don't need to turn off the computer, but I do
anyway. Then remove the mouse from the PC. You will probably need jewelers
screwdrivers or a very small tipped Philips screwdriver. Often at least a
few of the screws are behind stickers. After getting the screws out,
carefully take it apart, making sure you don't force it and see how the
parts are in there so they don't fall out. If you have to force it then you
probably missed a screw. Make very sure you pay attention to how every
piece and spring went together, so you can put it back together properly.
Now check all wheels for crud build up. This crud is often not that easy to
remove and I use a combination of finger nail and q-tip to remove. Next
check everything to remove any kind of dust, dirt, hairs, or fiber strands.
A can of air can be handy, but be careful not to blow a part out that might
be hard to figure out where it goes. Now check that all moving parts move
smoothly without getting stuck in certain positions. If the parts don't
move smoothly then you probably missed some crud. After all seems good, put
it back together. I recommend doing it as soon as possible, because the
longer you wait, the less you will remember about how the parts go back
together. ;)
Ed
P.S. Good Luck!

Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- Mouse Problem
Hi, my optical mouse is all of a sudden acting goofy, like it doesn't know
what it's supposed to do. I remember a discussion on this very same subject
not long ago, but since my mouse is ordinarily quite well-behaved I didn't
save the instructions someone gave about how to fix it. If I take it apart
can it be put back together? And do I disconnect it first? Or do I just
buy a new one? I don't even see how this one could get dirt inside of it,
so maybe it can't be fixed, maybe this is the end of his nine lives (?)
