Terry,
    The uninstall is unrelated to the problematic icons in your Start menu. 
It sounds to me like your old system simply has too many files that have 
corrupted over the years.  None of that is your fault, but I'm sure it's a 
real pain in the butt to deal with when you're trying to get things done. 
I'd like to take a different approach to the 'fix' since you're planning on 
getting a new machine soon.

    Do you have any experience hooking up a hard drive?
