ok... could be that the video drivers didn't load with the mainboard ones.
I've had that problem with alot of VIA chipsets with audio on board.

if your friend does have on board video, the monitor would plug into a
vertical [up & down] connector compared to a video card [sideways]
connector... if we are talking about a tower unit here.... if it is a true
desktop, the reverse would be true.  and if so, try reloading the main board
drivers.
